I am a HUGE music lover. Music of all kinds. It truly is the food of love (and my life). At any given point, I could rattle off the “soundtrack to my life”. In other words — the music that helps to define a particular moment in time for me (or a span of time). I like to post these lists for a number of reasons. For one, it allows me to go back and reflect upon those moments. Second, it allows me to share with the Jackverse what is going on in the musico-emotional whirlwind within me.
So, without further adieu, I give you the current soundtrack to my life.
1 Coheed And Cambria – Away We Go (from Afterman: The Descension. This song has a very special meaning to me at this moment. actually it has a deep connection to me and my wife and the wonderful future that is unfolding before us. Here’s a sample:
We’re giving up
You can leave what little we believe
Our flaw, discard, come give me what I need
My thoughts won’t go away, you are my holiday
That last line speaks so deeply to me and how I feel about my lovely wife. And yes, there is a bit of a hidden meaning for us in that song — something that will be revealed in the coming months.
2 Coheed and Cambria Sentry The Defiant (from Afterman: The Desenscion). I know, two songs from the same album — but it’s probably the best album I purchased in 2012. For me, this song is about strength and about getting through a challenging periods without breaking stride or losing the self in the process. This portion of the lyrics says it all:
Now be defiant, the lion
Give them the fight that will open their eyes
Hangman hooded, softly swinging
Don’t close the coffin yet
I’m alive
Though man and its machinations will try, it’ll take more than that to take me down! 😉
3 Rush – The Garden from Clockwork Angels. In most of the recent Rush recordings there is at least one song that punches you in the gut with a musical and lyrical brilliance that only Rush can manage. The Clockwork Angels album is no exception. That song is The Garden — which serves to remind us that life is measured by much more than riches and notoriety.
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect
This song also reminds us that the gardens we tend to are the ones that grow and serve our lives (and the lives of others) the best.
4 The Fixx — Anyone Else from Beautiful Friction. When I first heard this it instantly transported me back to a time of innocence, of youth. But it’s so much more than that. In typical Fixx fashion, this song speaks on so many levels. For me, the single most important level is that of the consequence of not being true to your self.
When will we know, what we have caused
the new child’s reign, is it already lost
When will we know
I can only be myself
I can’t be anyone else but me
In the end, I can only be me — and it is my responsibility to be the best me there is. That, of course, is a theme that has repeated throughout my life.
5 Coheed and Cambria — Wake Up from God Apollo I’m Burning. And we’re back to C&C. Why? Because their music (and words) have a huge impact on my life at the moment. This gentle song holds such a profound meaning for me and how I feel for my dear wife.
I’ve earned through hope and faith
The curves around your face
That I’m the one you’ll hold forever.
If morning never comes for either one of us,
Then this I pray to you wherever.
I’m not one of those who thinks a band has written a song for them — but to Coheed And Cambria, I will say “Thank you” for writing Wake Up.
And there they are — the songs that are currently making up the soundtrack to my life. There is one theme that underlies so much of my world at the moment — change. For my wife and I, there are big, wonderful changes on the horizon. I anxiously await those changes and hope this new chapter will inspire even more wonderful tales of fiction. I have a long way to go with Bethany and company and so many more worlds to develop and play with.
