Equality: The state of being equal.
Human rights. Women’s lib. Pride. Integration. Kindness. Acceptance. Humanity… love. It’s all there. Or is it. Across the globe you can find instances of sects of people repressed, mocked, humiliated, persecuted… slaughtered. Why? Because they are different. Either for ethnic, race, religious, sexual persuasion, gender presentation — one reason or another, equality is an ideal the human race seriously struggles to get a firm grasp on.
How can I say that? Let’s take a look at our history:
- The Inquisition.
- Women’s rights.
- Same sex marriage.
And that’s just the tip o’ the old iceberg. Yes, in some cases we have managed to get around those nightmares. But for the most part — there is an insufferable lack of equality across the board.
- In the US, the average CEO makes over 600% what the average employee makes.
- Gay men and women do not get the same rights as do their straight counterparts.
- Transgender men and women practically have zero rights in this country when presenting themselves in the gender of their choice.
- Atheists are treated as second-class citizens.
- The poor don’t stand a chance.
- Mediocrity is encouraged.
Again… only scratching the surface. It’s there, thick as thieves. Hatred for those unlike the norm. Anyone who stands out in a crowd does so knowing they will suffer the slings and arrows of ignorance and hate. Equality is such an issue in this world an organization had to be formed. The Human Rights Campaign works tirelessly to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. And that’s not the only group on the planet struggling to help the world see every man and woman enjoy the basic freedoms and rights assigned to mankind.
Unfortunately there are groups out there doing everything they can to prevent civil liberties for their fellow men and women. I don’t even want to mention these groups, lest they get ANY attention from me.
I want to ask you — those who hate, who deem others unworthy, unclean…
Why do you hate?
Let’s remove religious faith out of the equation. Why? Simple, because we don’t share the same beliefs, so your faith is not proof enough to me. What I want you to do is give me actual, tangible fact to back up your argument that there is something wrong with another race, another gender presentation, another sexual preference. Tell me. Be honest, be truthful, but just use hard, cold fact. Why do I ask for that? Because you have no fact. There is nothing on this planet to prove it is wrong for two people of the same sex to get married. You cannot prove to me black men and women are inferior. You cannot, and should not, judge my religious preferences.
We are all created equal. We are made of the same stuff. We are all brothers and sisters and those that cast aspersion should look in the mirror and feel nothing but shame.
Equality. Diversity. Acceptance. Love. It shouldn’t be something we have to fight for…it should just be.
So, what can you do? Simple — treat people equally. Regardless of race, sex, sexual preference, religion, skin color — we’re all made of the same pieces and parts underneath. Beyond that you can contact your legislature and insist they bring equality to your state and our country.
Besides that you can celebrate! Celebrate diversity, race, gender, religion, color, size, shape!
- June is LGBT Pride month.
- February is Black History Month.
- May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
- May 22 is Harvey Milk Day.
- March 8 is Women’s Day.
The list goes on and on.
Equality is one of the single most fabulous ideals we have to cling to. I hope each and every one of you hold this as dearly as I do. And, to bring this all home, his Takei-ness talks equality for same sex marriage.
