10 Things I’ve Learned After Writing 10 Books

Last week I published Lie Zombie Lie. This was a milestone for me on a number of levels. First of all, this is the fourth novel in the I Zombie series and offers both myself and my readers proof in the brain pudding that Bethany Nitshimi and company are here to stay. Second, and I say this with pom poms in hand, TEN FREAKIN’ NOVELS! It’s at this point which one would say with some assurance “Yeah, I’m here to stay.” And I’m not one to pat myself on the back much, but TEN FREAKIN’ NOVELS! Can I get a Muhaha from the Jackverse? I thought so.
But… what have I learned from this wacky hay ride? I want to offer all of you (readers AND writers) ten things that I have gleaned from this wacky pop dance? And so, without further hullabaloo, let’s get on with this bitch.

Here on Get Jack’d I’m starting a few new regular series of posts. We can’t have things getting stale — stale is so … yesterday! So to keep things minty fresh I introduce to you the first in my regular blogs Misfit Monday. Now many of you might be rolling your eyes or pish poshing the idea, thinking I’m going to be writing about various miscreants, killers, or maybe just covering Glenn Danzig and his leather-clad, skull wearing punk band. Though not beyond the realm of the possible, that’s not what this regular Monday entry on Get Jack’d is about.
Creating Killers

It wasn’t until I was doing a touring a show along the east coast and Canada that I had that magical moment of falling under the spell of a villain. That villain was Shakespeare’s Richard III as portrayed by the brilliant Colm Feore. When Mr. Feore limped onto the stage and recited “Now is the winter of our discontent…” he had the audience eating out of the palm of his twisted hand. We laughed, we ooh’d, and we ahh’d at his incredible acrobatic use of the language and his voice. But more importantly, we fell in love with a character so utterly evil that when he walked on stage carrying a severed head we thought it just…for a moment.

As many of you know, I am taking a very short breaking from the zombieverse to go back to some of my best friends in the Fringe Killer series. At the moment I am about twenty five percent complete with the first draft of Endgame and I wanted to share with you something I experienced last night while writing.

Recently I had been torn about what to write next. I finished the first draft of Die Zombie Die, which meant I was now ready to start writing something new (I always have a first draft and first rewrites going at once). I developed two new ideas:
- A new zombie series, based on the world created in the I Zombie trilogy.
- A vampire novel.

Many writers talk about music when referencing their work. I am very guilty of that. Not only do I often count on music to be my muse, I work it into my books in any way I can. Why? Music can so easily elicit mood and emotion in ways the written word alone can not always do. So music will crop up in my novels in the form of a simple mention of a title or artist or, in some cases, I will use lyrics (with permission by the artist of course.) And since music is such a strong influence over me and my work, I thought I would discuss how music worked its way into my currently published titles (and the titles I am working on.)

Write or Promote: That is the real question

My life has become so incredibly busy. I basically hold two full-time jobs, have a family, oh — and I try to write and promote my books. Needless to say, it’s exhausting. On the book front, I have three books going at once (all three at different stages) and have to figure out ways to promote the books that are published. It’s not an easy task, managing all of these duties, and I’m starting to realize, with regards to my books, there is one aspect far more important than the others — writing.
