The other night my wife and I were walking around our local Target store enjoying a capitalist repast. I noticed, ahead of us, an older lady clad in a leopard-print dress that hit her about mid thigh. She was sporting some seriously high heels and tastefully done make up. She was walking around with what could have been her spouse (who was happily doting over her). It was a wonderful and lovely sight to behold. Until…I started seeing the looks she was getting.
“If music be the food of life, play on!”
I make no bones about the fact that music is precious cargo to me. To that end, I decided, for whatever reason, to list out my favorite songs of the year, starting with my high school graduation date to the current year. These are not facts ma’am, just opinions…so take them as such and stop acting as if you’re about to point that blame-loaded finger of shame at me. Just read on and compare with your own opinions (and share while you’re at it). Do enjoy though.
Let’s face it, the world isn’t being taken care of. The leaders of the free (and not so free) world have pretty much chewed up the planet (and it’s population) and pooped it out into a steaming pile of “I don’t care”. Logic has pretty much left the building with Elvis and compassion was voted off the island along with intelligence.
This wouldn’t all be happening if I ran the world. How can I say that? The world is a tough place to run. It’s angry, confusing, and just generally in a constant state of PMS. But the leaders have pretty much run it so far into the ground that anyone with half a brain (and conscience) could do a better job. With that in mind, I thought I’d list out what I would do if the world was run by Jack.
I was chatting with a buddy of mine this week on the subject of forgiveness and how it relates to the world in which we live. The topic came about when I was telling him about a mistake I made in an article and how there was such a lack of forgiving and understanding surrounding said mistake. From that, it hit me just how our culture has degraded with regards to courtesy and kindness.
As you know, I’m a huge Rush fan. I have been since eighth grade (that’d be around 1982 — in case curiosity got your inner cat). I thought it’d be a cool little exercise to list out one favorite song from each of their studio albums. You can then put that playlist together and get your Rush on in Zombie King style! So, without further adieu, let’s have at it.
I was chatting with my step daughter when she asked me a simple question: “Why do Americans all look so different, when other races tend to look similar?” The answer was simple — we are mutts. Americans have bred with so many different races that we have become a veritable smorgasbord of flavor. This country was once called The Great American Melting Pot. Why? Because we welcomed everyone a home away from tyranny and oppression. We gave everyone the right to be treated as an equal and fellow human being.
So why does that end with, of all things, marriage? What is it about marriage that makes it so untouchable? After decades of American citizens abusing the institution, with the divorce rate above fifty percent — why are we still having to fight for the right for same sex couples to enjoy the legal and loving bonds of matrimony?
It’s that time again. I was sent a two-fold question from reader Jeremy Hunt . Jeremy asks:
I have a question for Ask Jack. Of all your books, which did you enjoy writing most, and which are you most proud of?
I am a HUGE music lover. Music of all kinds. It truly is the food of love (and my life). At any given point, I could rattle off the “soundtrack to my life”. In other words — the music that helps to define a particular moment in time for me (or a span of time). I like to post these lists for a number of reasons. For one, it allows me to go back and reflect upon those moments. Second, it allows me to share with the Jackverse what is going on in the musico-emotional whirlwind within me.
So, without further adieu, I give you the current soundtrack to my life.
Don’t deny it, you were waiting for a post of this design. The thrill of knowing just what Jack… okay, I can’t continue the thread of that thought with a serious face. But what I can do is share with you my top “stuff” for 2012. This can cover music, movies, books, moments… whatever I consider “stuff”.
And so, without further fanfare, let’s to the stuff!
As promised, I now offer you up questions sent in by readers/fans and answered by Jack/Wallen. This will be an on-going, regular-type feature here on Get Jack’d, so don’t think it’s too late to get your questions in. All you have to do is send in an email to me and I’ll be sure to get those questions answered! And now, let’s all put on our cookie pants, and answer some questions!
